Towards Blackness:
Strategies and Approaches in Improving Digital Collections
Black Lives Matter. As library and archival professionals, we can model that belief through investment of resources and the developments of strategies in making collections centering Black people more accessible. This work will notably require introspection and collaboration. Panelists will share efforts from a range of settings and projects, including a public library, an academic grant funded project, and a professional organization.
Panelists
Micha Broadnax currently labors as the Project Manager for the Black Teacher Archives. Informed by Black feminist imaginations, she pursued the library profession to explore archiving as a practice of self-care and the activation of archival spaces for community building. Micha is also the Digital Projects Archivist at Mount Holyoke College and serves as a community workshop trainer for Doc Now. In addition to private archival consultation experience, Micha has held positions at Converse (a subsidiary of Nike, Inc), Emerson College, and Harvard's Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America.
Shauntee Burns-Simpson (MLIS) currently serves as the 2020-2022 President of BCALA. She is the Associate Director of School Support & Outreach for The New York Public Library. An ambassador for libraries and Youth Librarian, President Burns-Simpson enjoys connecting people to the public library and its resources. She works closely with at-risk teens and fosters a love of reading & learning with her innovative programs. In addition to leading BCALA, she chairs the American Library Association Office of Diversity, Literacy, & Outreach Services (ODLOS) Committee on Diversity.
Jaccavrie McNeely is the Digital Services Librarian at Watertown Free Public Library in Watertown, MA. Her expertise is user experience and instruction, with an interest in introducing technology to new users. She holds an MLIS from Valdosta State University and a Bachelor of Science in New Media and Communication from Middle Georgia State University.
