About Digital Commonwealth

This website manages Membership & Programming services for Digital Commonwealth, including membership enrollment and management, registration for our Annual Conference and other events, and information about digitization services and standards.

Digital Commonwealth is a non-profit collaborative organization that was founded in 2006 in partnership with the Boston Public Library (BPL)*. We provide resources and services to support the creation, management, and dissemination of cultural heritage materials held by Massachusetts libraries, museums, historical societies, archives, and other cultural institutions.

We currently have over 180 member institutions from across the Commonwealth, and provide researchers, students, and the general public a single online point of access to members’ digital collections (open access discovery platform) containing more than 650,000 images, documents, and sound recordings. Search and explore the full online collection here.

Digital Commonwealth is a service hub (national network) of the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA); metadata is harvested from Digital Commonwealth as part of a national effort to "collect the riches of America's libraries, archives, and museums".

* Massachusetts cultural institutions may sign up for free digitization services administered by the Boston Public Library (BPL) as part of the Library for the Commonwealth program (Massachusetts state budget line item 7000-9401).
