The Local History Hierarchy of Needs

Local history curators can no longer be passive collectors of a location’s past. In an age where digital technology is disrupting traditional bonds in our communities, cultural institutions now need to create innovative programming that actively celebrates, facilitates, and captures local and regional identity. Using Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” as a model, Anthony Vaver (Local History Librarian at the Westborough Public Library) will identify the various phases that cultural institutions need to go through—and the skills that their staffs need to develop—to take their local history collections from being physical warehouses of artifacts to becoming vibrant, self-actualizing programs in our digital age.

Vaver’s presentation will help cultural institutions create a strategic road map for organizing their local history collections, digitizing them, creating tools to access them, and then developing programming to help the community they serve explore its past, celebrate its present, and craft its future.

Registration is $10.00 for Members and $20.00 for Non-Members.

Space is limited so register early.
